When you compare two passages, the first thing to identify is each passage’s main purpose. Knowing why the author wrote each piece—what point or goal they’re trying to achieve—gives you a frame for understanding everything that follows. It helps you see how they approach the topic, what evidence or reasoning they use, and what stance they take, which in turn makes it easier to compare similarities and differences in perspective, tone, and structure. Other details like names, dates, or how many paragraphs there are can be useful later, but they don’t tell you what the texts are trying to accomplish, so they’re not as helpful for the initial comparison. Starting with purpose keeps your analysis focused on the fundamental aim of each passage and sets up a clearer, more meaningful comparison.
